Nigeria Customs Kickstarts Retraining of Officers on Weapon Handling

The Comptroller-General of Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has initiated a one-month training course on weapon handling for 67 Customs personnel, comprising senior and junior officers.

In the opening ceremony held at the Customs Training College Ikeja on Monday, 25 March 2024, the CGC, represented by the Zone A Coordinator, ACG Hammi Swomen, advised the officers to see the course as an opportunity to learn.

“You have been selected from a large group of officers, which says a lot about all of you that are here. I want you to embrace everything that will be taught here, from weapon etiquette, weapon handling and all other training you will receive here,” he said.

ACG Swomen further assured the officers of the CGC’s commitment to the officer’s welfare while emphasising that the only way to appreciate the gesture is a commitment to service.

In his words, “Another point I want to mention is that the CGC is very concerned about our welfare, and very soon, you will see more initiatives in terms of it. The only way you can repay him is to be committed and diligent at your duty post.”

Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, in charge of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, expressed optimism in officers’ ability to perform, as the course is an avenue to deepen knowledge and be recognised by the service.

In his speech, Training College Commandant DC Haniel Hadison assured of a rigorous training exercise, stating that “we have seasoned and well-trained Customs personnel of the Rural Border Patrol (RBP) unit who were selected a few years ago for training in America, ready to impact what they learnt on these officers.”
