
Nigerian Air Force, Ministry Of Defence Align Strategic Priorities To Strengthen Airpower and Sustain National Security Operations
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, received the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, during a familiarisation visit to Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Abuja, on 11 March 2026, where both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s airpower capability in support of ongoing national security operations. The CAS noted that the visit comes at a critical time as the Nigerian Air Force continues to expand its operational engagements across multiple theatres, underscoring the importance of sustained institutional collaboration in advancing defence readiness and operational effectiveness.
Air Marshal Aneke highlighted key strategic priorities requiring continued institutional support, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, fleet modernisation, personnel welfare, and capacity building. He emphasised the importance of enhancing operational infrastructure across NAF establishments, as well as sustaining progress in the acquisition and integration of new air platforms and associated facilities. The CAS further stressed the need to strengthen human resource development frameworks, expand training opportunities, and ensure the availability of essential operational equipment to maintain momentum in ongoing counter-terrorism and internal security operations.
In his response, Mr Richard Pheelangwah commended the Nigerian Air Force for its expanding role in safeguarding national security and acknowledged the strategic importance of aligning policy support with operational requirements. He assured the Service of the Ministry’s continued commitment to facilitating critical initiatives that will strengthen infrastructure, enhance procurement processes, and support personnel development. Both leaders expressed confidence that sustained collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Air Force will further reinforce force capability, consolidate operational gains, and contribute meaningfully to the stability and security of the nation.
