Nigerian Laws Are Too Lenient to Punish Drug Offenders – Peter Orhii

The immediate past director general of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, has stated that Nigerian laws are too lenient and relax to punish drug counterfeiters.

Orhii, who said this in a chat with journalists in Makurdi yesterday, maintained that such laws promote sale of fake drugs in the country, rather than curtail it, thereby posing a big problem in the West African sub region, particularly in Nigeria.

“One of the challenges bedeviling the fight against fake drugs in the country is the lapsed Nigerian drug laws have and if these laws are not reviewed and strengthen, drug counterfeiters would continue to go scot-free to endanger lives of the masses,” he noted.

Orhii disclosed that while serving as NAFDAC boss, he setup a panel to review the drugs law, which proposed a life jail term for offenders.

“Personally, I had wanted a death sentence for offenders, because as far as I am concerned, a drug counterfeiter is a mass murderer and should be hanged.
