Nigerian Navy Hosts World Hydrography Day 2024
On Friday 21 June 2024, the Nigerian Navy (NN) hosted the World Hydrography Day at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja.
The Special Guest of Honour (SGOH) was the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and in attendance were the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Hydrographer of the Federation Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode and other dignitaries.
The SGOH stated that the Federal Government will harness the full potential of the nation’s maritime resources and opportunities to take Nigeria out of the present economic difficulties to create a diversified economy for sustainable growth and development. He commended the NN for playing an instrumental role in laying the foundation for Nigeria’s hydrographic capacity. Subsequently, the CNS noted that hydrography is a public good, just like construction of roads, it’s positive impact in terms of value is unquantifiable and that is why enormous resources are required. However, he noted that Nigeria is first and only West African state with membership of the International Hydrographic Organisation.
The SGOH later unveiled the revised hydrographic charts and a catalogue for the NN to enhance maritime safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The event was well attended, 3 thought provoking papers were presented and a number of resolutions to were reached.
