Nigerian Navy To Host 8th Edition Of The Gulf Of Guinea Naval Symposium
The Nigerian Navy is set to host the 8th Edition of the Symposium of the Heads of Navies and Coast Guards of the Gulf of Guinea, scheduled to take place from Tuesday, 26th to Thursday, 28th November 2024, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
The Gulf of Guinea, known for its vital role in global trade and energy supply, drives the economies of over 25 Central and West African nations. The region accounts for approximately 15% of global oil consumption, 5-6% of global oil production, and 30% of world maritime traffic, making it a critical player in the global energy and maritime landscape.
This year’s symposium, themed “Maritime Security and Sustainable Development in the Gulf of Guinea,” is organized in collaboration with the European Union and the French Navy. It aims to bolster regional maritime security through enhanced cooperation, coordination, and implementation of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct.
The three-day event will feature strategic sessions on:
• Regional and International Cooperation for Maritime Security.
• Maritime Domain Awareness and Information Sharing.
• Legal and Regulatory Frameworks for Maritime Security Operations.
These sessions will address maritime security challenges, explore integrated security strategies, and promote sustainable development in the region.
Participants will include Heads of Navies and Coast Guards from Gulf of Guinea nations, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations. The symposium will serve as a platform for exchanging ideas, strengthening partnerships, and advancing effective maritime law enforcement.
The event is also part of the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Gulf of Guinea in conjunction with other maritime stakeholders and allies.
