Northern Governors’ Wives Forum Visit Internally Displaced Persons and Commemorate World Cancer Day

The Northern Governors Wives’ Forum (NGWF) has held its first meeting of 2020 in the historic city of Maiguduri hosted by the First Lady of Borno State and Vice Chairperson, Dr Falmata Babagana Umara Zullum. The visit and meeting held on 5-6th February as the world marked the 20th World Cancer Day.

Consequently, upon arrival, the members proceeded to the Stadium IDP camp where they donated relief materials to the persons living there as well as dignity kits for the girls.

A cancer sensitization talk was given by Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu to the camp inhabitants. This was translated to Kanuri by a nurse practitioner where the local word for cancer is “Tunukura”. Quite movingly , the NGWF announced it would shoulder the cost of treatment of Hadiza Manga, a breast cancer patient. She developed breast cancer in one breast 2 years ago, was treated only to have it recur in the second breast.

Hadiza, who spoke at the venue urged women to be very aware of any changes in their body and seek medical assistance at the first sign of problem instead of hiding it or using traditional herbs. She thanked the Northern Governor’s wives for coming to her aid at this trying time.

Speaking earlier, the host and Vice Chairperson, Dr Falmata Zullum urged the 19 Governors of Northern Nigeria to empower and educate Internally Displaced Women and Children in camps and host communities of Northeast. She noted that the good people of Borno state would ever remain grateful to forum members, “because you share our grief and provided a sense of belonging when we need it most”

Also welcoming the August visitors, the Chairperson of the State Emergency Management Agency, Hajiya Ya Bawa Kolo decried the plight of IPDs in the state even though the current administration was doing its best to curtail insurgency.

An cancer advocacy campaign was then carried out where each of the First Ladies made a symbolic commitment to fight cancer in her state. In the same vein, a communique issued at the end of their formal meeting the next day called for a national screening program for breast and cervical cancer and HPV vaccination for young girls to be commenced with immediate effect.

Wives of Governor’s of Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kogi, Plateau, Nassarawa, Gombe and Bauchi attended the meeting.
