NYSC Coordinator Seeks Stronger Military Support For Corps Members In Plateau State
The Plateau State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Yavana Jonathan, has appealed to the Nigerian Army to intensify support for Corps Members deployed in the state, emphasizing the need for enhanced security and welfare.
Mr Jonathan made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos. He commended the military’s role in maintaining peace and providing security during NYSC orientation programs, stressing that continued collaboration is vital for the safety of Corps Members, particularly in high-risk areas.
“The discipline and training imparted by the military have been invaluable in preparing Corps Members for national service,” Jonathan said. “However, we must reinforce this partnership to address ongoing security challenges and ensure their well-being throughout the service year.”
He also expressed gratitude for the Army’s hospitality toward Corps Members stationed at the cantonment and called for additional welfare initiatives to improve their service experience.
In his response, Major General Oyinlola lauded the NYSC’s contributions to national unity and youth development, describing the scheme as a critical instrument of social cohesion. “The NYSC is not just a programme, it is a cornerstone of our national social fabric established under a military government to foster unity among Nigeria’s diverse communities, and has continued to instill patriotism in our youth,” he noted.
The GOC reaffirmed the commitment of Operation SAFE HAVEN to protecting all residents, including Corps Members, and highlighted ongoing security measures within NYSC camps. “We prioritize the safety of Corps Members and will continue working with community leaders and security agencies to create a secure environment for them,” General Oyinlola stated. He also assured the NYSC of an open-door policy for further discussions on support and collaboration.
The visit culminated with an exchange of souvenirs, the signing of the visitors’ book, and a group photograph, underscoring the strengthened alliance between the NYSC and the military in Plateau State.
