Olympic Games: Los Angeles set to Host Summer event after 44 Years

Los Angeles will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time in 44 years after officials confirmed the 2028 edition will be hosted in the city, leaving Paris to stage the 2024 edition.

According to BBC Sports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to name hosts for successive Games in June with just Paris and Los Angeles bidding – but it was unclear which would host in which year.

After the announcement, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said bringing the Olympics back was too good an idea to pass up after hosting the 1932 and 1984 editions.

Casey Wasserman, Los Angeles bid committee chairman said both cities now stand together ready to serve the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

The IOC wanted both cities to reach an agreement before September and had they not, a vote to select the 2024 host would have been held.

IOC president Thomas Bach described LA’s decision as “strong and enthusiastic”.

He added: “We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the IOC with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners. This agreement will be put forward to the IOC session in Lima in September for ratification.”

The two cities were the only ones left in the race for 2024 after Budapest, Hamburg and Rome withdrew.
