Pioneer Nigerian Air Force Officer, Group Captain Pereira, Celebrates 90th Birthday In Grand Style

Lagos witnessed a heart-warming celebration as one of the pioneer officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Group Captain Pereira (rtd), marked her 90th birthday in grand style, with the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) and the NAF high command ensuring a resounding presence at the events.

Acting on the CAS’s directive for a strong NAF representation, senior officers and commanders from across Lagos turned out in full force. The celebrations featured a giant birthday card — so large it stood taller than the celebrant — which drew admiration from guests. A personally signed congratulatory letter from the CAS was delivered and publicly read to warm applause, alongside a glowing message from the Chief of the Air Staff and another from the Chief of Medical Services.

The NAF further honoured Group Captain Pereira with a dedicated plaque, official magazines, and a special gift. Chief of Staff, Headquarters Logistics Command, and Wing Commander Omodunbi took turns to convey the messages, reinforcing the institution’s respect and gratitude for the trailblazing officer.

The milestone celebration drew a distinguished gathering, including former Vice President, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo GCON, and his wife; former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Major General IOS Nwachukwu (rtd) mni; and Air Vice Marshal AE Okpere (rtd), one of the pioneer NAF cadets from the 1963 set.

Guests lauded the NAF’s show of honour and described Group Captain Pereira as a true champion whose legacy continues to inspire generations of officers. The atmosphere was one of pride, admiration, and gratitude for a woman whose pioneering role helped shape the history of the Nigerian Air Force.
