Plateau State Commemorates Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2025 With Tribute To Fallen Heroes
On January 15, 2025, the Plateau State capital of Jos became a focal point for national pride and remembrance as dignitaries, military personnel, veterans, and citizens gathered to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The ceremony took place at the Cenotaph located at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat, emphasizing the sacrifices made by the Nigerian Armed Forces in the quest for peace and security in the nation.
The event featured a colorful parade replete with military drills, special prayers for the souls of fallen heroes, and a poignant wreath-laying ceremony. A 21-gun salute echoed through the air, symbolizing respect and honor for those who paid the ultimate price.
Among the dignitaries present were Plateau State Governor, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang; Deputy Governor, Honourable Josephine Piyo, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan; Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice David Gwong Mann; and Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division/Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, Commanders of Military Formations, Heads of Security Agencies, retired senior officers and veterans amongst several others.
A notable feature of the ceremony was the release of white pigeons, representing peace and unity, alongside the patriotic tunes played by military bands. Flags were flown at half-mast, and the colorful wreaths, adorned in red, green, and white, expressed the nation’s gratitude to the military for their unwavering commitment to the country’s safety and security.
During the ceremony, Ex-Sgt Christopher Ngwen was honored for his meritorious service, highlighting the significance of veteran recognition in reinforcing the military-civilian relationship. Following the formal proceedings, a special luncheon was held at the Rhino Officers Mess in Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, dedicated to both serving and retired personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
In her remarks at the luncheon, Plateau State’s Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Honourable Ngo Josephine Piyo, conveyed the gratitude of the state government for the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces. “Our soldiers serve as guardians of our freedom, and it is crucial that we recognize their efforts in maintaining peace within our borders,” she stated. She also emphasized the importance of a respectful and collaborative relationship between the military and civilians, pledging continuous support for the Armed Forces and improved healthcare for veterans.
Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the GOC 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, reiterated the sacrifices made by military personnel in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity. “This day is a solemn reminder of the price paid by those who serve our nation,” he said. The General expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support, stating that the partnership between the military and the state government has been vital in maintaining peace and security in Plateau State.
The ceremony concluded with a minute of silence in honor of fallen heroes, the unveiling of a handbook on first aid procedures authored by a soldier of the division, Corporal Damulak Daryitsan and goodwill message from the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion Plateau Chapter, as well as a group photograph that captured the essence of unity and remembrance.
