The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 60 suspected cultists in different parts of the State.
The suspects were arraigned using the new anti-cultism law recently passed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement released by the Lagos State Police PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspected cultists were taken to the Chief Magistrate Court, Yaba, on Wednesday, and arraigned before Adeola Adedayo, the Magistrate, using the new Lagos State Anti-Cultism Law, 2021.
The law prescribes 21 years as jail term for suspects convicted for cultism and 15 years sentence for individuals aiding and abetting them.
“The police prosecutors filed thirteen (13) count charge against the sixty suspects for various offences including Conspiracy, Murder, Cultism, Unlawful
“Possession of Firearms and Breach of Public Peace under the new Lagos State Anti-Cultism Law, 2021 and Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015,” the Police PRO said.
The Police PRO further said the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, led security operatives to storm a major cultist’s hideout in Ikorodu and arrested them.
According to the Police spokesperson, the Police boss described the new Anti-Cultism law as a blessing and a panacea to eradicate cultism from Lagos State.
“The law caters for many loopholes in the previous laws pertaining to cult-related matters in the state,” CP Odumosu said.
