President Buhari Approves Ekwueme’s Immediate Treatment Abroad
Alex Ekwueme to be taken out of the country for further treatment following the elder statesman’s rapidly failing health.
This was contained in a statement by the President’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Friday.
According to the statement, the former vice president would be conveyed in an air ambulance as his deteriorating health is considered an emergency by the president.
The statement reads:
“President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate medical treatment of former Vice-President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, outside the country.
“The approval followed a brief the President received Friday on the medical condition of the former Vice-President.
“The approval covers the immediate charter of an Air Ambulance for the emergency movement and the cost of treatment.
“President Buhari prays that God will grant the elder statesman speedy recovery.”
We reported that former vice president Alex Ekwueme collapsed last weekend at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu. He was subsequently rushed first to an unnamed hospital from which he was referred to the the Intensive Care Unit of Memfy’s Hospital for Neurosurgery, Trans-Ekulu in Enugu for treatment.
The development came just barely a week after the elder statesman celebrated his 85th birthday. According to a family source, the former vice president went into a coma after collapsing.
