President Tinubu Confers Posthumous CFR Honour on Late Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja
President Bola Tinubu has posthumously awarded the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to the late General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The prestigious award was conferred during a solemn funeral ceremony on Friday at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja.
In his tribute, President Tinubu described the late COAS as a trusted advisor, a man of action, and a patriot who prioritized the welfare of his country and those serving under him. “Throughout his military career, his legacy of service will be cherished forever,” the president remarked.
“As an eternal symbol of our appreciation, I’ve granted the late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.
The president further highlighted Lagbaja as one of his “best appointments” and noted his strong belief in the capabilities of Nigeria’s armed forces. He emphasized that although the nation mourns his loss, it celebrates his life and service. “We must rededicate ourselves to the principles and love of a nation for which he stood,” he added.
Tinubu praised General Lagbaja’s courage, sacrifice, and leadership, declaring that he will forever be remembered among Nigeria’s military greats. “Lagbaja had a clear understanding of the military’s role in securing and defending our country, its people, and our democracy,” the president said.
“He displayed uncommon valor in his duties and took care of the welfare of his troops and their families,” Tinubu continued.
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, vowed that the armed forces would use Lagbaja’s death as a renewed commitment to defeating all threats to Nigeria’s security.
He recalled the late COAS as a leader who “walked the talk,” leading with integrity, earning the respect of both his peers and adversaries. “His tenure was marked by decisive actions against insurgency, banditry, and other threats to our nation’s peace,” Musa said.
Musa also praised Lagbaja for his exceptional leadership, which greatly improved the operational readiness and morale of the Nigerian Army. Beyond his professional achievements, the late general was described as a man of profound faith, humility, and kindness. “He was a devoted family man, a mentor, and a friend to all who crossed his path,” he concluded.
