The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has charged universities of technology in the country to contribute their quota to the improvement of the economy by coming up with better efficient and cost effective process of producing goods and services, using information technology tools.
The President specifically tasked the Federal University of Technology Akure to come up with an approach to end the clashes which often happen between herdsmen and farmers in Ondo State.
Buhari gave the charge at the 40th anniversary and 32nd convocation of the university held on Saturday.
Represented by a visiting professor of the National Universities Commission, Joseph Ahaneku, the President said his administration would continue to provide the needed support in the ongoing war against crime and criminality in the country.
He said, “A sustainable engagement between universities and their host communities cannot be over-emphasised. Such collaboration would provide a mutual conducive environment for business/entrepreneurial activities to thrive.
“The FUTA, like other universities, must continue to ensure that research development, in collaboration with local industries, is targeted at proffering solutions to the identified challenges for community and national growth.
“As an ivory tower, FUTA should come up with a lasting solution to the menace of herders-farmers’ crises in Ondo state and environs.
“The responsibility of providing security is not the job of government alone. The people must be able to share useful information with security personnel about strange persons and activities around their locality.”
While congratulating the graduating students, Buhari charged them to brace up for the challenges ahead.
