Renewed Hope Elderly Support Scheme For Nigerian Veterans

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, MON, joined Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for the Elderly Support Scheme under the Renewed Hope Initiative. The event, themed “Total Wellness,” took place today, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Aso Drive, Asokoro, Abuja.

The First Lady, Her Excellency Oluremi Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of elderly citizens and veterans through the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).

The event marked a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to provide support to senior citizens, particularly veterans who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding the nation’s security.

The Elderly Support Scheme, an arm of the broader Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), aims to empower elderly citizens. The event focused on providing financial assistance and essential items to 250 veterans, each of whom received; ₦200,000 in cash, Bags of rice, Packs of noodles, and Cooking oil.

In his address, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle emphasized the need to honor the sacrifices of veterans and ensure their well-being. As the minister in charge of veterans’ affairs, Matawalle announced an expansion of the scheme to include 500 beneficiaries, promising that this initiative would become an annual tradition.

The Elderly Support Scheme is part of the First Lady’s vision for an inclusive and compassionate society. Beyond financial assistance, the scheme also provides free medical checkups. Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu reiterated her commitment to uplifting vulnerable groups through sustainable and impactful programs.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of prominent figures, including; the Chairman of the Military Pension Board, Air Vice Marshal IP Irumheson, The Representative of the Chief of Defence Staff, and the National Presidents of DEPOWA, NAOWA, NOWA, NAFOWA, and POWA.

Through these efforts, the RHI demonstrates a holistic approach to combating hunger, poverty, and economic hardship while empowering families and communities across Nigeria.

As the festive season approaches, the program not only provides immediate relief but also underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to building a compassionate and inclusive society.
