Sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai Troops Gets Specialised Training On International Humanitarian Law In Monguno

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has recently conducted a specialised training on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for troops of Sector 3 Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Monguno.

The two-day training which held from 19 – 20 February 2025 at Headquarters Sector 3 OPHK/MNJTF, Kinnasara Cantonment was aimed at addressing the evolution and applicability of IHL, similarity and differences between IHL and Human rights, enforcement of IHL, Child protection, healthcare of civillians, Sexual Violence, law during armed conflicts and introduction to the newly released guidelines on investigating violations of IHL.

In his welcome remarks to the participants, the Commander Sector 3 OPHK/ MNJTF Major General Mohammed Faggo Babayo, implored the trainees to use the knowledge gathered during the training to foster the practical implementation of IHL and international humanitarian principles.

Represented by the Commanding Officer, 242 Recce Battallion, Colonel Isya Muhammed, he noted that the thorough knowledge of IHL will empower troops to make informed decisions that balance military necessity with humanitarian considerations. He further added that their actions on the battlefield have far-reaching consequences and it is crucial that troops understand the laws and principles that guides their conduct.

The Team Leader of the ICRC delegation, Mr Patrick Hattwig commented, ” These kinds of forums with troops is key since they foster engagement on the basis of practical experience. They may also pave the way for further improving our understanding of IHL and other mandatory regulations applied during the times of war”. He suggested that due to the changing nature of conflicts over time, it is important to regularly conduct similar training programmes to troops in the frontline.

The ICRC in Nigeria collaboratively hosts discussion forums and training programmes to strengthen understanding and remind the military of their obligations in respect of the implementation of IHL and universal humanitarian principles.

The event featured series of lectures, interractive sessions and group photograph.
