Security operatives have foiled an attempted jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ubiaja, Edo State.
Intelligence gathered that the attempted jailbreak began as a protest by the inmates, who refused to return to their cells after it was opened.
Sources say some criminals among the inmates instigated others to protest against the service after hearing of the incidents at Oko, Benin, and Owerri centres to effect jailbreaks for possible escape.
This led to violence in the damaging of cells, admin block, medical office, and drilling of holes on the perimeter fence in a bid to facilitate their escape.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Correctional Service, and the Nigeria Army, however, repelled the jailbreak attempt.
The Nigerian Correctional Service Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Aminu Suleiman, who confirmed the incident said the inmates were repelled due to the re-enforcement of security operatives deployed to the centre to ensure normalcy and control of the situation.
