Senate Succumbs to Public Pressure, Drops Anti-Social Media Bill
The Nigerian Senate has finally bowed to public criticism and has withdrawn the frivolous petition also known as the anti-social media bill sponsored by Bala Ibn Na’Allah, Premium Times is reporting.
The bill was roundly condemned by many Nigerians on Social media because of a clause within it, which people believe was aimed at suppressing freedom of expression.
The bill was withdrawn on Tuesday after a report submitted by the senate committee on human rights and legal matters.
According to the report, the bill is a violation of citizen’s rights, and contradicts extant laws, as it serves as a stumbling block to the fight against corruption.
