South African Race Car Driver Gugu Zulu Dies During Trek4Mandela Expedition
TimesLive confirms that popular South African race car driver Gugu Zulu is dead.
According to reports, Gugu Zulu died early this morning while trying to reach the summit of mount Kilimanjaro during the Trek4Mandela expedition geared towards raising funds to ensure that 350,000 girl children do not miss a day of school due to menstrual challenges.
In a statement released on Monday, the Nelson Mandela Foundation announced that Gugu Zulu had experienced problems breathing when he reached the top of the mountain. A medical team supporting the trek had put him on a drip and descended the mountain with him. But sadly, all efforts to save his life were abortive.
Gugu Zulu and his wife, Letshego Zulu were part of a group of people who had joined to support the Trek4Madela expedition and the climbers were due to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro today, when the tragedy happened.
Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation expressed his shock over Zulu’s death.
“I am devastated. I knew him well. I recruited him to climb Kilimanjaro. The last thing he said to me at the airport before he left last week was that he wanted to speak about doing other Mandela Day projects. I feel a huge sense of loss” she stated.
Just two days before his death, Gugu Zulu posted several images of himself and his wife on their trip.
Gugu Zulu is a celebrated and well-established racing driver for Volkswagen and he is survived by his wife and baby girl who turned one in June.
South Africans are currently paying tribute to Zulu, describing him as a champion and national hero.
May his soul rest in peace.
