Strengthening Leadership In The Nigerian Army: COAS Opens Second Commanding Officers Workshop In Jos
The Nigerian Army has commenced its second commanding officers’ workshop of the year 2025, focusing on the enhancement of operational effectiveness through adaptive leadership in a rapidly changing security environment. The opening ceremony of the workshop, held at the Headquarters 3 Division, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, on 8 July 2025 brought together senior military personnel, heads of various security agencies, and commanding officers from units nationwide.
Declaring the workshop open, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, underscored the necessity for professional excellence, strategic innovation, and continuous improvement of the Army’s operational capabilities. Represented by Major General OC Ajunwa, Commander Armour Corps, the COAS emphasized that the workshop aims to enhance the efficiency and administrative competence of tactical-level commanders, equipping them with the necessary skills to manage personnel and resources in a joint and multi-agency environment.
“The objective of this workshop goes beyond theoretical knowledge,” stated Lt Gen Oluyede. “We aim to provide practical insights into managing contemporary security threats and leading our soldiers effectively.” He encouraged participants to engage actively in the planned activities, highlighting the importance of the lessons learned in guiding future actions and policies for the Army.
The workshop theme, “Enhancing Tactical Level Command and Leadership within a Joint Environment,” resonates with the current dynamics of warfare, where asymmetric threats and collaborative operations with other security agencies have become the norm. Major General EF Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, noted in his welcome address that the workshop is timely, as commanding officers shoulder the substantial responsibility of leading troops in the field and making critical decisions that ensure mission success.
“This platform for shared experience and innovation is vital for our operational effectiveness,” Maj Gen Oyinlola remarked. “The skills and strategies discussed here will empower you to lead with confidence and competence in today’s complex battlefield.”
He extended gratitude to the COAS for entrusting the 3 Division with the hosting of the event and commended the Chief of Training (Army), Major General AS Ndalolo, for orchestrating its success.
The workshop features a comprehensive agenda, including lectures, interactive sessions, and group discussions designed to stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving among the participants.
