TASUED: NANS ISSUE NIGERIAN ARMY 24-HOUR ULTIMATUM TO RELEASE ARRESTED STUDENTS, PLANS MASS PROTEST TO ILESE BARRACKS IN OGUN STATE

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Nigerian Army to release all students arrested or be prepared to kill as many as possible students in a planned protest to the Ilese barracks.

This comes after troops invaded the University campus on Thursday, arresting the Students Union President, Sodiq Ridwan, and other students.

The ultimatum was made known in a press statement issued by NANS President, Asefon Sunday, on Friday October 29.

Comrade Asefon revealed that the Students Union President was oppressed, repressed, and extra-judicially incarcerated.

He disclosed that the Army is expected to combat the rising insecurity in the nation and not harass students who are not carrying arms or posing any threats to Nigeria.

The NANS Leader urged that the troops at the Ilese barracks be redeployed to the North East to combat the menace of bandits and terrorists ravaging the region.

He said; “The Nigerian Army is naturally expected to concentrate her efforts in combating the multifaceted security crises in Nigeria and not have the luxury of time to spare to harrass students who are not carrying arms against the nation. That the Nigerian Army in Ilese have the luxury of harassing and intimidating armless students is a clear indication of their lack of commitment to national security and we believe it is only reasonable if the ranks and file at the Ilese Barrack are redeployed to the North East to fight real war against bandits and terrorists so that they can get busy.

“I therefore, on the potency of the mandate of all Nigerian Students across board, give a 24hrs ultimatum for the unconditional release of all our students being held at the barrack. Failure to company with this ultimatum, I advise the Nigeria Army in Ogun State to immediately begin to mobilize arms and calling for re-enforcement as I will relocate the National Secretariat of NANS to Ogun State, specifically the Ilese Barrack, lead from the front with thousands of students mobilized across the nation and either get killed by the trigger happy soldiers or enforce the release of our students.

“By this release, I therefore direct all our structures to get set and be on standby for Ilese Invasion after the expiry of this ultimatum. We have had enough intimidation, extortion and harassment from the Nigerian Police, we must not allow same by the Nigeria Army to degenerate to the level that cannot be controlled.

“Again, get set to kill us all, or release our students immediately.”
