The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, On Friday 30 August 2024 delivered a lecture titled “The Role of the Nigerian Navy in Combating Maritime Crimes and Advancing Nigeria’s Blue Economy” at the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS) University of Ibadan.
The lecture was the 3rd Distinguished Personality Lecture hosted by the Institute in recognition of alumni who had distinguished themselves in their various careers.
During the lecture, the CNS highlighted the recent and numerous successes of the Nigerian Navy (NN) in combating maritime crimes which directly influence the positive potential for exploration of Nigeria’s Blue Economy. He also reminded the audience that the NN had kept Nigerian waters piracy free since 2021 thus improving the economic outlook of maritime shipping to and from Nigeria. Finally he requested for speedy prosecution and disposition of maritime crimes because the Judicial delays are challenging the progress of arresting maritime offenders.
The lecture was well received and engendered a robust interactive session. The atmosphere was both academic and convivial with the University faculty excited to receive one of their products in the person of the CNS.
Subsequently, the CNS was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute. Additionally, retired senior officers of the NN domiciled in Ibadan made a presentation to the CNS. In return, the CNS thanked both the University and the retired senior officers for their recognition and presence which had clothed him with humility. He enjoined all to keep working together for the good of the nation
