We Will Tackle Illegal Oil Bunkering Harder – EFCC

The new Head of Operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt’s Zone, Mr. Nnaghe Obono Itam has vowed to tackle cases of illegal oil bunkering and other economic and financial crimes in the South- South more decisively and with renewed vigour.

He gave this assurance on Thursday, February 1, 2018 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in an Interactive Meeting with Journalists.

According to him, the South- South region of Nigeria remains the treasure base of the nation and every oil- related economic and financial crime in the region is a dangerous dagger in the heart of the nation.

“We are determined to reduce corruption, we will reduce economic and financial crimes and see that law enforcement is going hard on these illegal activities particularly in the oil sector in the South- South. We will drive them head on”, he said.

Itam lamented the corrosive effects of corruption on Nigeria, stressing that corruption was the bane of the development of the nation.

He submitted that Nigerians from all walks of life must be prepared to drive the change they desire. “We are prepared to drive anti- corruption in all sectors. Until the cancer of corruption is dealt with, we may not find the development that we desire. Government will come and go and we will not find the solution or change we desire until we are actually willing to drive the change and stop the practices that are engineering the under- development we find around us”, he said

He called on the media to be more development- focused and report events beyond any extraneous interest.

Journalists had ample opportunities fielding questions on the activities of the EFCC in the South- South, particularly on the increasing effectiveness of the Commission in curbing cases of illegal oil refinery, oil bunkering, crude oil theft, piracy among others.
