10,000 Kano Women Sign Up for Mass Marriage
No fewer than 10,000 women in Kano, Nigeria have registered to be married at a mass marriage ceremony, an official of the state’s Islamic board, Hizba, has told the BBC.
The Hizba board regularly arranges mass wedding ceremony to reduce the number of single women in the state.
Under this arrangement, the women are introduced to prospective husbands, but they are not coerced into accepting them.
According to the BBC, Some of the women confessed that their search for a partner had been fruitless, thus they subsequently rely on the Hizba to help them get a suitable partner.
For others, the huge cost of wedding has forced them to rely on the Hizba-organised mass ceremony.
Sufi, who is a senior Hizba member, said he expects the number of women seeking to marry to rise by the time the next ceremony takes place. No date has been fixed for the ceremony yet.
A total of 5,000 men and women have been married since mass weddings were introduced in Kano in 2012.
