1Division Hosts Security Stakeholders’ Engagement In Giwa To Boost Civil-Military Cooperation

As part of its Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives to consolidate peace and deepen community relations, the Headquarters 1 Division Nigerian Army (NA) hosted a Security Stakeholders’ Engagement today at the Giwa Local Government Council Secretariat.

The forum was organized under the leadership of Major General Abubakar Sadique Muhammad d Wase, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 1 Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA. The GOC was represented by Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, the Chief of Staff 1 Division.

The high-level engagement brought together a diverse group of participants to deliberate on the security dynamics of the area.

Attendees included: Representatives of security and paramilitary agencies, traditional and religious leaders, officials of the Giwa Local Government Council, community leaders, women, and youth groups, farmers and representatives of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, delegates from Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

In the GOC’s keynote address, delivered by Brigadier General Opurum, the Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to fostering robust civil-military relations through sustained community dialogues. The GOC emphasized that lasting peace relies on collective responsibility, mutual trust, and seamless collaboration between security agencies and the public.

The deliberations focused heavily on practical security measures, including: Wet-season security threats and hotspot mapping Intelligence gathering and proactive information sharing, Mitigating and preventing farmer-herder conflicts, Joint security operations and coordinated patrols

Community-led security and confidence-building initiatives. Rapid response and de-escalation frameworks for critical incidents.

During the interactive session, community stakeholders praised the professionalism, resilience, and sacrifices of the troops deployed to the Area of Responsibility (AOR). Participants noted that sustained military operations have drastically improved security across Giwa Local Government Area, enabling residents to safely go about their lawful businesses.

The forum unanimously agreed that the ongoing security operations have remained strictly professional, impartial, and free from ethnic, religious, or sectional biases. To consolidate these gains, the stakeholders pledged their continuous support and committed to providing timely, credible intelligence to the military.

Earlier, the Commander Sub-Sector 6, Colonel AM Wase, welcomed the delegates and described the engagement as a timely initiative that bridges the gap between the military and civilian populations.

The Vice Chairman of Giwa Local Government Area, Hon. Ibrahim Shehu Shika representing the Council Chairman commended the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring them of the local government’s unalloyed backing.

Representing the women of the community, Hajia Fatima, the Women Leader of Giwa LGA, expressed gratitude for the inclusive nature of the engagement and pledged that women would actively promote peace and community security participation.

Closing the event, the Council Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Talimu, delivered the vote of thanks, thanking the 1 Division leadership and reiterating the collective resolve of all attendees to maintain lasting peace and stability across Giwa LGA and its environs.
