Actualising The Utilization Of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) In The Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army (NA) has commenced the transformative journey with partnership with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG) which is a component of the palliative of the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration directed at providing succor to the masses occasioned by the transitive hardship of the fuel subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Sequel to this, The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has directed the Corps of Supply and Transport in collaboration with Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers to align with Federal Government Policy on seeking other alternative energy sources for it’s operations in view of subsidy removal. Thus, the NA in collaboration with the PI -CNG to kick started the Nigeria Army Fleet auto switch program. The program was kick started on 19 Mar 24 in the Abuja zone while training for Lagos Zone was launched today, Thursday, 21 March 2024, at Headquarters Corps of Supply and Transport Conference Room, Bonny Cantonment, Lagos State.

Speaking at the training programme launching, the Commander Corps of Supply and Transport, Maj Gen AA Adeyinka, in his opening remarks, stressed the importance of the transformative journey in order to achieve the COAS “Command Philosophy which is to transform the NA into a well trained equipped highly motivated force towards achieving our constitution responsibilities within a joint environment.”

Sequel to the removal of Petrol Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy and the full deregulation of the petroleum products market, the price of PMS has increased significantly. As such the COAS as directed the two Corps to consider alternative sources of fuel to enhance the NA operation through combat service support.

Present at the occasion were the representatives of both corps. The Commander Technical Group Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Brig Gen AK Onashoga, represented the Commander Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers while the Acting Chief of Staff Headquarters Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Colonel NE Udofia amongst other Staff Officers and Commanding Officers from both Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport were also present at the Event.
