Armed Robbers Attack CBN Bullion Van in Jos, Kill 2 Policemen
Armed robbers on Tuesday attacked a convoy of bullion vans belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at Hawan Kibo along Jos – Abuja expressway, killing two policemen in the process.
The bullion vans and their entourage of armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos for Abuja in the early hours of Tuesday when they were ambushed by the armed robbers decked in military gear somewhere along Hawan Kibo, immediately after a military check point.
First, they killed a policeman in a patrol team belonging to the Plateau State security outfit, “Operation Rainbow” stationed in Riyom local government, before the CBN convoy ran into the mayhem whereupon the armed robbers opened fire on it.
In the ensuing shootout, a mobile policeman in the CBN convoy was shot and killed by the daredevil robbers.
The slain policeman has been identified as Sgt. Anthony Jawa, from Mobile Police Squad (MOPOL) 8, Jos, Punch reports.
While confirming the incident which reportedly occurred at about 8:30am, Police Public Relations Officer of the State’s Command, ASP Tyopev Terna, said he was yet to receive the full report from the Riyom Divisional Police station, adding that some policemen were killed, but he did not know the number.
The attacked bullion van and escort are presently being guarded at the Federal Road Safety (FRSC) office in Riyom.
It was not confirmed whether the robbers carted away with some of the money.
