ATTACKS ON SECURITY OPERATIVES AND RELEASE OF OVER 1800 INMATES LAYING GROUNDS FOR INSURGENCY IN SOUTHEAST

The recent spike in attacks on security operatives in the South East, including Monday’s release of over 1800 prisoners from the Owerri Correctional Facility has laid grounds for insurgency in the South East which must be quickly nipped in the bud before the region’s insecurity situation degenerates to that of North-Eastern Nigeria.

The Nigeria Police has fingered members of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) as the perpetrators of Monday’s attack on the Imo State Police Command Headquarters as well the Owerri Correctional Facility where over 1,800 inmates were freed.

Before the attack, there have been targeted attacks on security operatives in the Southern region which has led to the killing of over 20 policemen and at least 10 police stations have been attacked from January till date.

However, the attack on the Imo State Police Headquarter and the Owerri Correctional facility has been the most severe as the criminal elements bent on destabilizing the country now have manpower consisting of hardened criminals as recruits to lay a strong foundation for insurgency in the South East.

Security experts believe that the Owerri correctional facility was broken into as proof that

diaspora funding is being effectively and judiciously spent ostensibly to get more funds for the propagation of the secession movement.

The perpetrators counted on the publicity the havoc wreaked during the attacks would sway many previously sitting on the fence to join the struggle for Biafra or buy their safety peradventure the Biafran struggle persists.

The ploy seems to be working as investigation reveals that following the successful attacks on security operatives in the last two weeks, there has been a heavy inflow of funds targeted to accounts of the Biafra agitators.

Folks have begun contributing to secure a front seat in the upcoming Biafran regime.

Entrepreneurs have opted to make contributions to align themselves with the agitators as part of measures to ensure their businesses are not targeted during future attacks.

While others political detractors are rendering support to buy the support of a demonstrably potent militant group.

At this point, the people that can salvage the situation are respected Igbo monarchs and thought leaders, many of whom might be weary to speak against the Biafra movement for fear of being labelled traitors and possibly attacked.
