Borno State Organises Townhall Meeting to Commemorate Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary

….Extols the Campaign to Build Borno Back and Better

The Borno State Ministry of Information and Internal Security, in collaboration with the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Peace Ambassadors Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Development (PACHE) organised a Townhall meeting in honour of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary to discuss the development Agenda and Peacebuidling trajectory of Borno State.

The meeting was held on Monday 2 October 2023 at the Waziri Ibrahim Hall of Maiduguri Metropitan Council Secretariat. Themed “We Shall Borno Back and Better”, the forum was graced by over 80 participants including, top government functionaries, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society activities, youth, women and human rights activists, and commanders of military and security agencies.

The Townhall critically assessed the government’s governance and development agenda, and the Borno Model of Peace, Reconciliation and Development. The forum emphasised the role of civil society, communities, youth, women and vulnerable segments of society in supporting governments agencies to achieve the objectives of peace, security and development.

The Townhall Meeting extolled the efforts of the government in ending the insurgency, and restoring peace in Borno State, but noted that there are challenges of rising criminality and deviance that must be addressed collectively. The Meeting recognized governance as a work in progress, and recognized the importance of public participation in governance and peacebuilding

The Meeting particularly registered the role of traditional rulers, community leaders, women, youth and the vulnerable in Building Borno Back and Better.

Participants called for more Townhall Meetings to discuss matters of public interest.

Finally, the Forum extolled the virtues of the Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum CON (Khadimul Ummah), for providing a visionary and focused leadership, phenomenal development, and an atmosphere of free speech and constructive engagement in Borno State.
