President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday left Nigeria for a “short leave” in the United Kingdom as part of his annual vacation.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President would resume work on February 6 after undergoing “routine medical check-ups.”

“President Muhammadu Buhari leaves for the United Kingdom today on a short leave, which is part of his annual vacation. He is expected to resume work on February 6, 2017,” the statement read.

“During the vacation, the President will also undergo routine medical check-ups.

“In line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President of the Senate, and Speaker, House of Representatives, have been duly communicated.

“While away, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, will perform the functions of the Office of the President.”

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, who is tasked with piloting the affairs of the nation in President Buhari’s absence, is presently leading the Federal Government’s delegation at the World Economic Forum holding in Davos, Switzerland.

There have been concerns over the president’s health as he was last seen publicly during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations while he also cancelled a scheduled meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, Punch writes.

This will be the third vacation the President has been on over the past 12 months following his six-day vacation to London in February last year and another trip to the UK to treat an ear infection four months later.
