Chief Of Army Staff Commissions Newly Constructed Block Of 30 Flats In CBQ At Marda Barracks Yaba

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu Nigerian Army Medal ably represented by the Commander Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (CCEME) Major General Adeyinka Ayodeji Adereti commissioned the newly constructed Block of 30 flats in Corporal Below Quarters at Marda Barracks Yaba, Lagos State. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Barracks today 31 March 2026.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the COAS, Major General AA Adereti stated that the project was a practical interpretation of the COAS Command Philosophy which recognizes that the strength of the Nigerian Army resides in the well-being, morale and readiness of its soldiers. Adding that the access to a decent accommodation is fundamental to achieving operational efficiency and sustaining a motivated force. He commended 45 Engineers Brigade for their professionalism and technical expertise in ensuring the successful execution of the project. He congratulated the beneficiaries and charged them to take full ownership and ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief Host, Acting Commander 1 Base Workshop Colonel CO Iruegbukpe described Marda Barracks as a unique place for the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps, adding that it is the home of the Corps and notably, the only existing NAEME barracks apart from the Corps School (Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) located in Auchi Edo State. He further stated that the Barracks has become the residence for many of the officers and soldiers serving not only in Lagos but also supporting operations and units across the country, noting the significance of the event for the NAEME family. He remarked that the project is truly unprecedented for those living and working in the barracks, emphasizing that they have never had it this good. He also appreciated the quality and standard of accommodation being commissioned as it represents a clear improvement in the living conditions of personnel.

The ceremony was graced by Commander Corps of Ordinance Major General AG Ibrahim, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division Major General AA Babalola, representatives of Commanders Corps of Engineers, Signals, Supply and Transport, Medicals and Education, other Senior Officers as well as members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers Wives Association Marda Barracks. Highlights of the events included unveiling of the Commissioning stone, a guided tour round the project, presentation of keys to beneficiaries and presentation of souvenirs. The programme climaxed with group photographs.
