Chief Of Army Staff Commissions Shopping Complex, Pledges More Welfare Facilities

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday, 28 January, commissioned an ultra-modern Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL) Shopping Complex in Asokoro, Abuja, describing the project as a deliberate investment in the welfare, socio-economic wellbeing and morale of Nigerian Army personnel and their families.

The COAS said the commissioning must be viewed within the broader context of the enduring commitment of the Nigerian Army to the holistic welfare of both serving and retired personnel. He explained that this commitment is pursued through carefully designed policies, prudent resource management and the provision of enabling infrastructure that enhances quality of life and supports orderly community living within Army formations and estates.

Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that the shopping complex is intended to serve residents of adjoining Army barracks, improve service delivery and stimulate legitimate economic activities within Nigerian Army estates and host communities. He added that the facility is expected to function not only as a commercial hub, but also as a catalyst for local enterprise, employment generation and sustainable socio-economic growth.

Reaffirming his command philosophy, the COAS stressed that troop welfare remains central to operational effectiveness and institutional resilience. He pledged continued support for welfare-focused initiatives that are properly managed, supervised and sustained, while aligning the Nigerian Army with broader national development objectives.

The COAS further emphasised that while quality construction is important, the long-term value of the facility depends largely on effective management, strict adherence to safety regulations, and responsible use by all stakeholders. General Shaibu enjoined all allottees and users of the complex to remain safety-conscious and take collective responsibility for the protection of lives and property. He expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in providing an enabling environment for reforms and welfare-driven initiatives.

Earlier, the Group Managing Director, Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Allison, stated that the project was conceived in line with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, which prioritises personnel welfare and sustainable development. He urged both military personnel and members of the public to take full advantage of the complex to enhance their economic livelihoods.
