Chief Of Army Staff Reaffirms Nigerian Army’s Strategic Support For African Defence Exhibition 2026
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Nigerian Army Medal has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to initiatives that elevate the nation’s defence posture, strengthen strategic partnerships and advance technological innovation. Declaring his readiness to fully support the forthcoming African International Defence Exhibition, scheduled for 2026, the COAS described the project as a national imperative and a forward-leaning step toward deepening Nigeria’s defence diplomacy and industrial capacity.
The COAS made this position known today 28 November 2025, during a courtesy visit by the African International Defence Exhibition Committee to the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, the COAS expressed immense satisfaction with the initiative and assured the delegation of the Army’s full cooperation towards ensuring a highly successful event. He underscored the exhibition as a strategic platform to showcase Nigeria’s indigenous military technologies, defence innovation and operational proficiency to the global security community.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further emphasised that the forthcoming exhibition aligns with the Nigerian Army’s vision to strengthen local content development, enhance inter-agency collaboration and promote doctrine-driven modern warfare capabilities. He urged the organisers to clearly identify priority areas where the Nigerian Army’s support would be most impactful, assuring them that his office remains open to sustained engagement and constructive collaboration.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Major General Babatunde Alaya, outlined the purpose of the visit and referenced the resolutions of the recent Chief of Defence Staff’s Conference in Abuja. He recalled that the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) had signed a memorandum of understanding with DMG Events, United Kingdom, to co-host the maiden Defence Exhibition in Lagos.
Major General Alaya disclosed that the African International Defence Exhibition slated for 26–28 October 2026 at Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, aims to spotlight cutting-edge defence and security solutions, indigenous innovation, cultural identity and strategic technologies from Africa and across the world. He noted that the exhibition will feature high-end demonstrations, including advanced weapon systems, cyber and space security showcases, and next-generation operational capabilities. He appealed for the COAS’s support in elevating the initiative to a national project and confirmed that a formal request would soon be submitted to facilitate seamless coordination.
