The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has urged the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State to come up with a new document framework that would proffer solutions to the current security challenges that is bedeviling the country. General Olonisakin disclosed this on Monday, when he played host to the NIPSS Acting Director General, Mr Jonathan Juma, who led the members of the Senior Executive course (SEC) 40 of the institution on a study tour to the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

General Olonisakin stated that NIPSS is a strategic institution that have over the years contributed to the development of the manpower of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the public and private sector. He revealed that government has adopted some of the Institution’s researches as policies to enhance national development.

In his words, “I would therefore propose that NIPSS carry out further research and make recommendations to both the government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria on possible ways of addressing current security challenges.’’

The CDS who described the security challenges to include, “herdsmen and farmers’ clashes, insurgency, ethnic, agitations, amongst others, noted that there was need to adopt other method to resolve these challenges in order to complement the efforts of the military.

The Defence Chief then expressed confidence that NIPSS would come up with solution to some of these security challenges.
Responding during the visit, the Acting Director General NIPSS, Mr Jonathan Juma said that the SEC 40 study theme, which is “Strengthening Internal Security Framework and Community Policing in Nigeria: Models, Policy Options and Strategies,” was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. Disclosing that the SEC 40 participants were expected to research in this area with the aim of coming out with policy framework to resolve the security threats of the nation.

While appreciating the Nigerian Armed Forces for fulfilling its responsibilities of defending the country, Mr Juma said being a strategic stakeholder in nation building, NIPSS would continue to partner with the Armed Forces in order to promote national unity and development.
