Court Stops NLC From Going on Planned Nationwide Strike

The National industrial Court (NIC) has ordered the Nigerian Labour Congress and other labour unions in the country to suspend their planned nationwide strike to protest the hike in fuel price announced by the government, Channels television is reporting.

The court, on Tuesday granted the prayer in a suit filed against the NLC by the Attorney general of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

According to the court, the NLC should shelf its planned industrial action pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit filed by the AGF. And to allow for the conclusion of negotiations with the federal government.

Last Wednesday the government announced an increase in the pump price from N86.50 to N145.

Organised labour in the country gave the government until Wednesday to revert to the old price of petrol or face a nationwide strike.

Meanwhile negotiations between government and organised labour are still ongoing following an impasse reached on Monday.

The case will be heard on May 24.
