‘The Devil Pushed Me’ – Taxi Driver Who Robbed Passenger of N1.8m Explains

Muritala Olugunju is obviously not inspired by the many tales of honesty displayed by individuals who return huge sums of money as he deliberately robbed his passenger of the sum of N1.8 mil.

The 38-year-old taxi driver was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team after his helpless victim alerted the police.

The passenger, Mohammed had requested the services of Olugunju on a visit to Abuja. Olugunju then picked his passenger at Wuse Zone 6 area of Abuja for shopping, and later drove the unsuspecting victim to the hotel where he wanted to lodge.

Unknown to Mohammed that he was being watched by his taxi driver, he entered the hotel to book a room, leaving his belongings which included a bag containing the sum of N1.8 million in the car. Olugunju, who saw this as a great opportunity to make quick cash, absconded with his victim’s bags; leaving the poor man stranded.

Mohammed immediately alerted the IRT upon discovering he had been robbed, and the taxi driver had made away with his belongings. The police immediately began trailing the suspect, and he was arrested a few weeks later.

While speaking to Vanguard, the suspect blamed the devil for pushing him into stealing. He explained that he suspected Mohammed was carrying cash because he had been monitoring him in the course of their trip and noticed that he did not once visit the bank nor use an ATM.

Breaking down how he dispensed the ill-gotten funds, he said;

“I gave N200,000 to my girlfriend and I also gave my sister N80,000. Then I bought a car for myself which I intended to use for my business, but before I knew what was happening, I was arrested. I regret doing this and I hope my passenger will forgive me.” he pleaded.
