Fighting Corruption Would Engender Peace, Development – Magu

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday September 19, 2019, stated that tackling corruption would engender peace and development in the country.

The acting Chairman stated this while speaking at an event organised by a non- governmental organisation, Faculty of Peace in commemoration of World Peace Day with the theme, “Corruption, Threat to National Peace and Development.”

The EFCC boss said tackling corruption would reduce criminality and create platforms for development. We must collectively work to bring to justice those who want to reap where they did not sow”

The acting Chairman who was represented by the Williams Oseghale, Head, Public Affairs Department, Benin Zonal Office, called on all patriotic Nigerians to join hands with the Commission in the fight against corruption.

He said the task of eliminating corruption was onerous and therefore stated that all hands must be on deck to eliminate the malaise.

He said the Commission has upped the ante in the fight against corruption with the successful prosecution and conviction of the former governors of Plateau State and Taraba State, Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame. The two former governors are currently serving various jail terms.

In his contribution, Professor Osaretin Aigbovo, of the University of Benin said corruption is the greatest single problem of Nigeria, “Corruption also has harmful social effects, for example, it disproportionately affects the poor by increasing the cost of basic social services with the attendant risk of destabilization for the society”.
