The football legend asserts that Gianni Infantino wants him to take over the implementation of the Superliga in his homeland, and has warned against government interference

Diego Maradona may soon have a big job on his hands, as he claimed he has been asked by FIFA to oversee matters at the crisis-hit Argentine Football Association (AFA).

The 1986 World Cup winner is currently in Paris, where he met new FIFA president Gianni Infantino prior to taking in the Euro 2016 opener between France and Romania.

And the footballing icon says that during his chat with the Swiss national, he was offered a special mission in his home country.

“This man [Infantino], who is sick of thieves in football like Julio Grondona, has asked me to be the Superliga overseer,” Maradona said to Big Bang News.

The Superliga proposal has split Argentine football, while the AFA received a blow last week when it was intervened by members of the General Justice Inspection (IGJ) unit on suspicion of various administrative irregularities.

Maradona also had a message for President Mauricio Macri: “As much as he would like to, he cannot intervene in the AFA because FIFA will stop all football there.”

The meeting in Paris marked a reconciliation between Infantino and the Argentine, who had previously denounced him as a “traitor”.

But Maradona affirmed that the Swiss was the best man for the job.

“He is on the players’ side,” he affirmed, while stating that Infantino sought allies to bring “families back into football.”
