On Tuesday, the 24th of October 2023, I had the privilege of participating in the inaugural session of a two-day International Symposium that carries profound significance for the socio-economic development and well-being of the African people. The event, held at the Shehu Musa ‘Yaradua Centre in Abuja, was a remarkable gathering of governments, civil society organizations, and various institutions dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of countering organized crime in Africa.

The symposium tackled themes that are not only pertinent but also imperative in the modern age, ranging from Drug Crimes, Terrorism, Arms Trafficking, Maritime Crimes, Human Trafficking, Cybercrime, Financial Crimes, Environmental Crimes, to Auto-Theft. These topics reflect the multifaceted challenges that threaten the fabric of African societies.

The underlying message of this event is the paramount importance of building resilient institutions as the bedrock for effectively countering these emerging threats. Strong institutions are the cornerstone of any nation’s capacity to combat crime, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
