In a thrilling fusion of sport and service, Nigeria hosted the prestigious Nija Open Taekwondo Tournament from August 21–22, 2025, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event drew elite fighters from across Africa including Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Tunisia, vying for international fighting licenses and continental glory.
The Nigerian Army (NA), represented by the Directorate of Army Physical Training (DAPT), made a powerful statement on and off the mat. Led by Major Lucky Ogiemudia NA Taekwondo Chairman, the team competed for global ratings while embodying the discipline, resilience, and combat readiness that define military excellence. “Taekwondo sharpens mental toughness and boosts combat readiness,” said Major Ogiemudia, thanking the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede for his unwavering support. “This is our third event this year, and the COAS ensures we’re always battle- ready on the mat and in the field.”
Lance Corporal Daniel Alexander, one of the standout competitors, credited taekwondo with enhancing his self-defense skills and professional discipline. He expressed his gratitude to the COAS for championing initiatives that empower soldiers in and out of uniform.
Team Nigeria wrapped up the tournament in style, snagging 3 Gold, 6 Silver, and 23 Bronze medals to claim second place overall, while the NA held their ground with a proud 5th place finish, proving once again that Nigeria is fast becoming a powerhouse in African martial arts.
This tournament wasn’t just about medals, it was a celebration of international camaraderie, military valor, and the unifying power of sports.
