Governatorial Elections: Chief Of Defence Staff Visits Ondo State, Assures Free and Fair Ground

Ahead of the forthcoming Ondo State Gubernatorial election slated for Saturday, 16 November 2024, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR paid a courtesy visit on the Ondo State Governor, His Excellency, Mr Lucky Aiyadatiwa on Thursday, 14 November 2024. The visit was part of the CDS’ operational visit to assess the readiness of troops and other security agencies that will support the conduct of the governatorial elections in the state on saturday.

Speaking at the Ondo State Government House, the CDS thanked the Governor for his warm reception. General Musa said the aim of his visit was to reassure the Governor of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) readiness and commitment to ensuring smooth conduct of Saturday’s election and to address troops on their responsibilities regarding the elections.

The Governor during his remarks, commended the laudable contributions of the military in securing the state. He expressed gratitude to the 32 Artillery Brigade located in the State for working closely with the government to ensure a peaceful and safer Ondo. He also noted that there has been a significant reduction in crime rates in the state.

Meanwhile, the CDS while addressing the Commanders on ground, appllauded their efforts so far in keeping peace in Ondo State and encouraged them to do more. He noted that INEC is the lead agency in the election, and as such, every other agency will be performing a supportive role. He further stressed the need for troops to be ready to carry out their assigned tasks.

The CDS further said that “election should not be a war. We must be fair to all. Nobody should be partial. We must work together, respect citizens no matter how triggered, exercise restrain, and be firm.” Speaking on the issue of ‘Cash for Vote”, the CDS directed all security agencies to support to the EFCC. “Once we see such, we should report to the relevant agency”.

The CDS also took time to address the troops of Operation Safe Conduct, Ondo State who are on standby for deployment to various sectors where the election will take place . He charged them to be their brothers’ keepers, give their best and ensure citizens are safe while exercising their constitutional right.
