Following the attack on the police headquarters in Owerri, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has deployed security reinforcement to the State to improve the security apparatus and prevent further attacks on security formations and facilities in the State.

We earlier reported that gunmen, in the early hours of Monday April 5, attacked the police headquarters in Owerri, Imo State, and freed several inmates.

In a statement by Force PRO, Frank MBA, investigations show that the assailants who invaded the police facility with weapons such General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), are members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The Force PRO said the gunmen’s attempt to break into the police armoury at the headquarters was met with heavy resistance from security operatives who prevented them from looting and carting away ammunition. He revealed there was no fatality recorded but a police constable sustained an injury from a bullet wound on his shoulder.

The Police also recovered one of the operational vehicles used during the operation and is currently under forensic investigations.

The Police Chief, who condemned the attack on the security outfits, ordered  the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command and a new Special Investigation Team to carry comprehensive  investigations into the incident with a view to fishing-out the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

Adamu described the attack as ‘deliberate’, and an ‘attack on the soul of our nation’ admonished leaders in the State and other South-Eastern parts of the country to speak our against all forms of criminality and violence.

He urged all residents to provide useful information to security operatives that can assist in arresting the criminals.
