LAGOS COURT SENTENCES 10 PIRATES TO 12 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR ABDUCTING THE CREW OF A CHINESE-FLAGGED VESSEL

Reports indicate that a Federal High court in Lagos on July 23 sentenced 10 pirates to 12 years imprisonment for abducting the crew of a Chinese-flagged vessel.

The Presiding Judge of the High Court, Justice Ayokunle Faji, who sentenced the kidnappers for the crime they committed last year, also fined each man 250,000 naira ($608) for each of the three counts for which they were charged.

Justice Faji noted that the abductees onboard a FV HAILUFENG II vessel were kidnapped by the pirates in May 2020, describing the incident as “an embarrassment to the nation that has impacted the economy negatively.”

Recall that last year a Nigerian Court enacted the first convictions under a 2019 anti-piracy law. Prior to this development, no definite law had been in the constitution against pirates.
