Lil Wayne Suffers Major $20m Lawsuit Setback Due to Feud With Birdman

Lil Wayne’s $20million suit against Universal Music Group (UMG) has been halted by a Federal Court Judge who ruled that the rapper should first settle his score with Cash Money Records boss, Birdman.

In March, Wayne, through his Young Money Entertainment company, filed a lawsuit against UMG over claims that the record label cheated him out of royalties for his work with Nicki Minaj, Drake and Tyga.

For Universal Music Group, the company ‘justifiably’ did not pay Wayne the said royalties because they had paid a $100million advance to the rapper’s parent label, Cash Money.

On the other hand, in January 2015, Lil Wayne had filed a $50million lawsuit against Birdman and his Cash Money Records over claims that the record label cheated him in their agreement. That case has been long drawn out, and also speckled with life-threatening drama.

But, sadly, Cash Money is signed to Universal Music Group, just as Wayne’s Young Money is signed to Cash Money, hence UMG felt the need to return the royalties due to Wayne back to itself, because Cash Money still owes them.

Arguing their case with Wayne in court, UMG asked that Wayne first settle his beef with Birdman, before the court proceeds with the rapper’s lawsuit against them because the outcome will affect their tiff with Wayne. Hip Hop DX reports that the court saw sense in that and granted that wish.

However, this is a major bottleneck as Wayne’s lawsuit against Birdman’s Cash Money reportedly isn’t due in court for hearing until next year. This means the rapper will wait out the resolution of that suit before he can continue with his case against UMG.

Previously, there were hopes that Wayne and Birdman had resolved their differences, but in May, Wayne cancelled settlement talks with the Cash Money boss.

This is one messy, extended family drama!
