Man Miraculously Survives Orlando Shooting After Being Shot Three Times

A good friend of Rodney Sumter, who barely survived Sunday’s Orlando mass shooting after being shot three times says she is extremely relieved he’s still alive.

“His father says his surgeries went great but that he’s in a lot of pain,” Krystal Stutz, Rodney’s friend and former co-worker tells PEOPLE, “Thank goodness he’s stable. He’s just overwhelmed at this point.”

Rodney, 27, had recently started bartending at the Pulse nightclub. He was with a friend when they first heard gunshots that wound up killing 49 people and injuring 53 in what authorities have called the deadliest mass shooting in United States history.

Upon hearing shots, Stutz says, “[Rodney] grabbed his friend and they were both laying on the floor. When they started hearing the shooting in the other room, his friend ran towards the dressing room and Rodney ran the other way.”

At that point, Rodney was shot three times,,once in each arm and once in the back.
