Man United Far More Boring Under Jose Mourinho – Van Gaal
Jose Mourinho has been the target of critics since Manchester United lost 2-1 to neighbours Manchester City in the title clash Sunday, and the latest salvo aimed at the Portuguese has come from his predecessor, Louis van Gaal.
Mou has regularly been slammed for his ultra-defensive strategy in big games, and van Gaal says Manchester United are “far more boring” now than they were under him.
Van Gaal was also heavily criticised for the flatness of United’s play during his time at Old Trafford, but the Dutchman insists this side is far duller than the team Mourinho inherited, Goal writes.
“If you ask me how did I do at United, I will say it was my best year ever, given the circumstances I was working under,” Van Gaal told Fox Sports Netherlands.
“We played football that was quite alright. But it’s not football that is appreciated in England.
“And yet, right now, looking at United, I have to conclude Mourinho is not being criticized while it’s far more boring football.
“What United produce now is defensive football. I always played attacking football. The proof is that the opposition were always parking the bus.
“They don’t do that now because Jose Mourinho plays so defensive.”
Van Gaal was manager at Barcelona from 1996 to 2000 when Mourinho worked as his assistant with City boss Pep Guardiola the club’s captain at the time.
With Mou and Pep now leading both Manchester clubs as managers, Van Gaal is adamant the latter’s side are a much better watch than the former’s.
“I would rather watch City play than United,” he added.
“You need quality in a squad and it’s clear City have a better squad.”
Shots fired! It remains to be seen how Mou reacts to this.
