Modu-Sheriff Stopped From Taking over PDP Headquarters

Deposed chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu-Sheriff, stormed the Abuja headquarters of the former ruling party today to forcefully take over administrative duties.

Sheriff, whose controversial rise to the chairmanship of the party has spawned a lingering leadership tussle, led his supporters to besiege their Wadata Plaza headquarters Monday morning, Premium Times reports.

He was however prevented from gaining entrance to the secretariat by security operatives who had been alerted following his threats to do so over the weekend.

The former Borno State governor was chairman before the party’s botched national convention held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on May 21, after which party elders and other stakeholders sacked him and announced the appointment of a caretaker committee headed by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi.

That same day, a group of party elders led by former Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana, also held a parallel convention in Abuja, threatening to split the party should Modu-Sheriff remain at the helm.

But party leadership announced last week that a reconciliation meeting had resolved all the issues, paving the way for the resumption of Mr. Makarfi and his committee to resume work at the secretariat.

Meanwhile, Modu-Sheriff has insisted he remains national chairman despite earlier reports that his group agreed to the reconciliation moves.
