Munich Attack Update: Police Confirms 10 Dead Including Lone Gunman

The police authorities in Germany have confirmed that the Munich attack on Friday left 10 people dead including the gunman now believed to have acted alone.

The shooting incident took place at a shopping mall in Germany’s capital and devastating images from the chaotic situation now dubbed the Munich attack, quickly went round.

Guardian reports that the police in Munich have also confirmed that nine people were shot at and killed while 21 others were injured in the Friday evening attack. The gunman shot himself, bringing the death toll to ten.

The police also identified the perpetrator of the Munich attack as an 18-year-old with dual German and Iranian citizenship. Initial reports had suggested that there were multiple gunmen.

His motive is still “fully unknown”, the chief of Munich police told a press conference in the early hours of Saturday.

Sixteen people remain in hospital, the police chief said. A number of the gunshot victims are said to be in “serious” condition.

AP reports that survivors of the Munich attack described terrifying scenes:

“We entered McDonald’s to eat…then there was panic, and people ran out,” one woman told Bavarian public television.

She said she heard three gunshots, “children were crying, people rushed to the exit in panic”.

A man who said he worked at one of the shops in the mall, described how he came face-to-face with the shooter.

“I looked towards him, he fired at two people and I fled the building by climbing a wall.

“And then I saw bodies and injured people,” he said.

The police confirmed it was aware of a “fake game” on Facebook that may have led people to believe that the McDonalds cafe where the Munich attack took place was giving out free meals. The police chief could not however say if it was in any way linked to the attack.

The White House condemned “in the strongest terms” what it described as an “apparent terrorist attack” while other world leaders have also expressed their support for Germany.

The Munich attack comes after recent attacks in Paris and Nice in France, and Turkey leading to the loss of many lives.
