National Security: CDS Charges Military Officers On Strategic Thinking As AFCSC Holds Regimental Dinner for Senior Course 42

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin has charged middle cadre military officers on the deployment of critical thinking in tackling the security challenges bedeviling the nation. Gen Olonisakin gave this charge while addressing participants of Senior Course 42 of Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) during their Regimental Dinner in Kaduna.

The CDS who was the Guest of Honour at the occasion, spoke on the topic titled “Armed Forces of Nigeria and The Challenges of Internal Security: The Roles of Junior Military Leaders.” He reminded the student officers that as junior and middle level military leaders much is expected from them as the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies continue to combat the persistent security challenges confronting the country.

The CDS noted that the officers must understand the current internal security environment, which he described as complex, dynamic and characterized by influences of non-state actors who have ulterior and hidden motives that are at variance with the nation’s security objectives.

He further explained that their ability to skillfully and professionally navigate the motives of these non-state actors should be their objective. This, the CDS said could be achieved by an in-depth understanding of the operating environment and the actors involved.

The Defence Chief urged officers to exhibit clear thoughts and judgment in decision making and also guide against manipulative tendencies of some parties to the crisis. “Remember that as a member of the Armed Forces, you are required to be apolitical and neutral in your decisions and actions.” The CDS adviced.

The CDS equally stated that multi-dimensional approaches in collaboration with retinue of security personnel, law enforcement agencies, media practitioners and the civil populace at large should be incorporated in tackling the emerging security challenges.

The regimental dinner is part of activities lined-up for the graduation of Senior Course 42.
