Nigeria National Football Team Moves Up Fifa Ranking
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed five places to 47th on the latest Fifa world rankings released Thursday.
It’s the highest position for the Eagles since dropping to 52 last year, as the team gets in shape ahead of the World Cup this summer.
The five-place northward shift comes on the back of two grade A international friendlies against Poland and Serbia in March that saw the Eagles win 1-0 and suffer a 2-0 loss respectively.
Nigeria’s climb on the monthly rankings comes as all her three World Cup Group D opponents Argentina, Croatia and Iceland – dropped.
Lionel Messi’s Argentina dropped one place to fifth, Croatia lost three places in 18th, while Iceland fell from 18th to 22nd.
Tunisia remains the top-ranked African side on 14th, with Senegal, Congo DR, Egypt and Nigeria completing the top five. They are also the only African sides in top 50 of the rankings.
World champions Germany, meanwhile, remains the no 1 team on the planet, followed by five-time champions Brazil, star-studded Belgium, European champions Portugal and two-time world champions Argentina in the top five.
Gernot Rohr’s Eagles resume their World Cup build-up with a home friendly against Congo DR in May, before going up against England in a prestige game at Wembley early June.
